Lonesome Republic played it’s first show the other night at the 119 Gallery in Lowell.  It was part of the second Spiral Collective event, A Very Spiral Krampus Party.  It was pretty awesome, and it was really strange to be playing piano live.  But it went very well.  Then last night, Now Denial played an awesome show in Allston with a bunch of good friends to a bunch of good friends and good strangers.  It was also a very fun show.  Though after xmas, then shows, and work, I’m so tired that I think I’m delirious.  My lovely girlfriend bought be a Wii for xmas, and I haven’t had much time to play it.  But I am going to play the fuck out of it later.

Anyway, speaking of shows, Lonesome Republic has yet another show booked now.  This next one is on Sunday January 17th, at TT The Bear’s in Cambridge.  Aside from that show, Lonesome will be recording within the next month as well.  So with any luck, we can have some tunes available on CD by March.  As for Now Denial, we’ve got our mastered EP in our hands (some of which you can hear online).  We just need to get it released, so instead of waiting around we’re just going to do a short run of CD’s ourselves and then hopefully it’ll see a vinyl release thereafter.

Things are more hectic than ever right now, but all good things… so it’s all good.  Aside from the music-related endeavors, I’ll be moving soon (staying in Lowell though), and I’m consistently busy with my new job as an employment specialist at Vinfen.  Pretty stoked on life all around.

I returned from Fest 8, one week ago today.  It was an amazing time.  I’ll be writing an article about it for Columns, but here’s a list of the awesome bands (some not so awesome, but whatever) I saw while there, in the order I saw them:  Fiya, Strikeforce Diablo, Panthro U.K. United 13, In the Red, American Steel, Small Brown Bike, Clairmel, City of Ships, Ghastly City Sleep, Pygmy Lush, Hair Beard Combo, Less Than Jake, Hanalei, Hawks & Doves, Planes Mistaken for Stars, Off With Their Heads, Chris Wollard & The Ship Thieves, Radon, The Methadones, Samiam.  Yea, that’s a lot of music… you can imagine how much fun it was.

Anyway I started my new job the day after I got home, plus I was getting sick, so things have been hectic, and I’ve felt pretty haggard.  Now Denial had a show in Cambridge last Thursday as well.  Things are mellowing out a little bit now though.  I’m listening to the new, final master of Now Denial’s latest recordings right now and it’s awesome!  We’ll be looking to release these five songs as an EP, then write and record a few more for some split releases.  Things are looking good.

So yea, everything is everything.

Today I officially enter my “late”-20s.  Things are going pretty awesome in life though, so that’s cool by me.  Last weekend, Now Denial headed to Philly and Baltimore for a couple of shows with Get Laid.  Philly was ridiculous.  It was at some house that looked like it was just meant to have shows.  Something like 200 people showed up and a bunch of bands played.  The only downfall was that it was a rainy, dreary day (well, weekend as a whole actually).  Baltimore was also a great time, and we got to see our friends Jeremy and Brett while down there.  Good times.  On Sunday night, we departed from Baltimore sometime after midnight, and drove all night, arriving back in Boston around 10am.  Then we were asked to play a show on Tuesday at Great Scott when a band canceled.  Lots of shows, lots of fun.  Also, Now Denial’s latest recordings are being mastered by Nick Zampiello at New Alliance, and I think I should have a copy later today.  A few split releases are in the works.

Lonesome Republic is back at it and making great strides of progress.  We’ve been tightening up existing songs, and the last song we wrote came together in a much different but completely organic way.  Generally, at first, Rich or Adam would come with a song and we would just make adjustments and play it as a full band.  But this new one was more of a group effort, which sort of gave way to thinking about other ways for each of us to contribute to the writing process.  It’s working well, I think.  We’ll be recording proper within the next month or so.

Speaking of music, I know I’ve had a “music” section of this blog for a while, but I just added audio to it.  So you can check out some tunes from each of my various projects, and I’ll keep it updated.  I’ll throw some new Now Denial songs up there when I get the master.

The job situation is looking better.  I was offered a salary position as the new employment specialist at Vinfen in Lowell.  This was an unexpected, but great, turn of events.  I have two more days left in my current position, then I start my new job on November 6th.  I’m looking forward to it.

This week, after I work my last two days, we’ll be leaving to go down to Fest 8 in Gainesville, FL.  Days of fun, music, food, and drink will ensue.  I plan on taking notes on the whole experience and writing an article about it for Columns.  I’m sure I’ll also write here about Fest when I return.  Until then, keep on keepin’ on, friends.

September 22nd, 2009

Finally Autumn is here!  By far my favorite time of year.  Summer ended on multiple bad notes for me.  First, I learned that somebody at the organization I worked for totally dropped the ball in submitting their bid proposal for this area’s DMH contracts, so now another organization was awarded the contracts.  What that means for me is that I have to apply to this new organization to keep my same job (yes, this is the same thing that happened three months ago… happening all over again with a different organization).  Alternately, I can see if there are any positions available for me within my current organization, which is improbably.  Sucks either way.  I wish I could just work in audio since I went into ridiculous debt to get a degree in that field.  Oh well.

Job stuff aside, my cat was hit by a car and killed last week.  Bowie the cat was only here with us for a short time, but he was very much loved, and will be missed greatly.  And fuck whoever it is that killed my cat.  Stupid cars driving all fast.

Anyway, I’ve been doing some web design work including the Spiral Collective website, and a web-store full of homemade sweets called Sweet Lydia’s.  Both are almost finished.  Again, if you need any web work done, please do get in touch.

Now Denial has been playing more shows lately.  We’ll be playing in Philadelphia and Baltimore with Get Laid on October 17th & 18th, respectively.  That’ll be cool, first time we’ve played out of New England in years.

Lonesome Republic has been hanging on, kind of weathering through some bad luck.  With my piano being broken, and in the shop for about three weeks now, and Adam’s amp being gone up until last week.  Practices have been sparse.  Though I should have my piano back by this weekend.  We’re looking to play a few shows, then record in November.

I have high hopes for the fall this year, it’s looking to be kind of hectic, but pretty fun.

August 31st, 2009

Things have been breaking left and right lately.  Had to drop about a thousand bucks on my car.  I’ve had a few guitar pedals break.  My digital piano, which I use in Lonesome Republic, is being all wonky… so I just brought it to be repaired.  That’s going to set me back a little.  Bummer.

Anyway, we spent a day mixing the new Now Denial recordings with Dan G a couple weekends ago, that’s coming along nicely.  Should be set to be mastered relatively soon.  We also just played the last Wadzilla show this past Friday night.  That was one of the best fucking shows I remember playing in a long time.  So many people packed into a basement, moving around and yelling the words.  Awesome.

I also just sold almost all of my pedals on eBay, and replaced them with a couple of Ibanez pedals (AD-9 and TS-808), modded by Robert Keeley.  These things sound fucking nice.  I’m currently trying to fix my EHX Hot Tubes pedal to sell, but not having much luck.

Looking forward to going to The Fest 8, down in Gainesville, FL in October.  Just bought tickets the other day.  Though I just heard from work that I might not be able to get the time off.  Which would suck very much.  So here’s hoping.

I’ve been working diligently on the Spiral Collective website, which should be complete soon.  And I have some other web design work that I’ll begin soon.  Busy, busy, busy…

Oh yea, If you’re on Facebook, be friends with Now Denial and Spiral Collective, as I’ve branched both out into the world of evil social networking.

July 28th, 2009

Now Denial recently tracked five new songs with Dan Gonzalez in Allston, MA.  It will mixed and mastered in the near future, then released in some way.  More shows and writing of songs will ensue in the meantime.

Lonesome Republic has written seven songs and just recorded a rough demo, and after a few more songs, we’ll be recording all of them for real.

Issue #2 of Columns was recently published (read it online here).  Along with the first Spiral Event and an attempt at Folk Fest activities.  Spiral Collective continues to make progress, as does the zine.

I’m always busy, but I’m happy.

June 12th, 2009

Much has been happening lately on all fronts.  Now Denial has been writing new material, and making a lot of progress.  We’re planning on heading into the studio on the third weekend of July to record all of our new material.  We’re weighing our options for upcoming releases, possibly some split releases.  Who knows?

I’ve also been playing piano in a band called Lonesome Republic with Rich Ferrell (guitar, vocals), Adam Caires (bass, vocals), and Rick Stec (drums).  That has been a learning experience, as I’ve never played piano in a band setting.  But it’s been going great, we’ve got five songs in three practices, and we’re talking about recording a demo in the not-too-distant future.

I haven’t mentioned it here yet, but I’ve been a part of starting an arts collective known as Spiral.  You can go to the website soon and read all about it, I’m currently working on getting the site up and running.  One part I will discuss here is a zine we put out called Columns.  We just got Issue #1 out the other day, the first run of 50 copies is pretty much gone, so we’re doing another run of 50 this week.  You can read the first issue online on the website, which is also under construction, but I’m keeping it up so our contact info and the ability to read the zine online is still there.  Issue #1 delves into everything from politics, to punk, to technolofy, and also throws in poetry, haikus, art, recipes, and more.  And it’s free!  Hooray!

May 10th, 2009

So much coffee.  But anyway, Now Denial jammed for hours yesterday and wrote our first new song with Dino behind the kit.  To say we’re stoked wouldn’t do it justice.  Get ready for some serious fucking rock!  Recording some time this Summer.

Speaking of recording, The Big Big Bucks just got their new album, Crucial Schmooze, mastered and I’ve been listening to it all day.  It’s fucking great.  Like, really, seriously good.  Get into the Bucks if you’re not already, and get this album when it comes out this Summer.

In other news, I’m really hard up for money, so I’m offering up my services in electronics, computers, and audio for a nominal fee.  I can set up your computer, fix it, upgrade it, whatever you need.  Set up home theatre systems, set up pro audio systems, run live sound, graphic design, web design, recording, mixing, whatever you need… jack of all trades here.  Just get in touch and we’ll work something out.

April 23rd, 2009

I’ve been quite busy as of late.  Now Denial has been gaining steam and making much progress.  “Facemelter” is available on CD and LP now, and we’ve played a couple of record release shows so far.  More shows are booked, and we’re planning on even more for this spring and summer.  We’ve also been finishing up the new material we’ve been writing, and are making plans to head into the studio.  Now Denial is playing this Saturday (April 25th) at O’Brien’s Pub in Allston, MA.

I still haven’t found any work in the audio field, but I’m still doing related things.  Right now I’m mixing some sessions that I recorded of Adam Caires, last summer in our old apartment.  The songs are great, and I’ve put off mixing this for way too long.  I also recently recorded some demos for Now Denial and Bar Sinister.  And once I finish up Adam’s recordings, I’ll be working on some remixes of various things.

Musically, I’ve mainly been focusing on Now Denial.  However, I may be starting a new project soon with a couple of friends.  So we’ll see where that goes.

I’ll have more to write about soon.  Take care.

February 19th, 2009

New website is finally up.  I’m going to make this a pretty general update on the state of things in my life now.  First, Now Denial is getting ready to kick copious amounts of ass… our pal Dino is now playing drums for us and is doing an awesome job.  The LP sleeves for “Facemelter” were printed by the fine folks at Pirates Press, and are in the mail now.  We should have those assembled and ready to go in the next few weeks at the latest.  Then we plan on playing a few record release shows, then working on new material, then putting out more records.  We’re pretty stoked. I’ve also updated the Now Denial website in many ways, and is now marginally better.

I graduated from the New England Institute of Art with a degree in Audio Engineering back in August… then worked for Bose very briefly before being laid off due to company-wide cutbacks.  So now I’m back working my old job at Bridgewell.  Although I’m working 2nd shift these days as opposed to the graveyard shift that I worked for 4 years.  I’m looking for work in audio, but it’s kind of tough with the economy the way it is, so for now I’m hanging onto this job and just doing some recording on my own where ever I get the chance.

Aside from that, I’m living in Lowell still… moved from South Lowell to the Highlands, but Lowell nonetheless.  I haven’t been writing nearly as many songs as I used to.  I think mostly because my main source of inspiration had been misery, and I’m doing better these days, so I can’t find inspiration in the same old places.  Which were all dark places.  But I’ve started to change my approach to writing, and looking for inspiration elsewhere, in better places.  So I’m going to be working on songs, and with any luck I’ll have a few projects in the works this year.

Speaking of music, I just updated the New England Music Archive.  Mostly just the layout has changed, though I have added a bunch of new music as well.  One thing I did was re-mix and master my first CD and put it up there.  I mostly just remixed it because it was originally recorded in Apple’s GarageBand, and that program sucks.  So I imported everything into ProTools and gave it another go.  It sounds marginally better, still sad bastard songs though.  More important are the other good bands/artists that I’ve updated the site with.  I recommend the stuff I uploaded from Antiques and The Big Big Bucks.

Anyway, that’s about it for now.  I’ll be changing this site around a little here and there in the next month.
